Harry Hartog's review
This is not at all what I thought it would be… and I'm not mad about it. I'm actually thankful. Robbie Arnott has created some genuine Australian fiction that’s sits completely separate from the cliché-ridden genre. Here, we’re looking at narrative styles and structure that is so wildly scattered - yet it is so well adjusted that it MUST BE the Tasmanian landscape in literature form. The role that nature is heart-warming, I could feel myself craving to be outdoors; traversing these mountains; flying over the rivers; diving into the great oceans. as far as the enchantment of its magical realistic themes take the narrative, it is well grounded - everything that happens seems oddly within reason. Oh the freedom of imagination. I love it. - Ben, Marketing
Description
The highly praised debut from Tasmanian author Robbie Arnott, now in a beautiful B-format edition. Released ahead of Arnott's second novel, coming mid-2020.
A young man named Levi McAllister decides to build a coffin for his twenty-three-year-old sister, Charlotte-who promptly runs for her life. A water rat swims upriver in quest of the cloud god. A fisherman named Karl hunts for tuna in partnership with a seal. And a father takes form from fire.
The answers to these riddles are to be found in this tale of grief and love and the bonds of family, tracing a journey across the southern island that takes us full circle.
Flames sings out with joy and sadness. Utterly original in conception, spellbinding in its descriptions of nature and its celebration of the power of language, it announces the arrival of a thrilling new voice in contemporary fiction.
