“It is the artist’s business to reveal to man- kind a new outlook on life and the world.” Dorrit Black, 27th April 1946.

Dorrit Black was an Australian painter and printmaker of the Modernist school, known for being a pioneer of Modernism in Australia. She maintained a determined commitment to practising, promoting and teaching modern art while sustaining a strong desire to express her own artistic vision. Her European artistic experiences of studying in London and Paris in the 1920s inspired her to establish the landmark Modern Art Centre in Sydney in 1931.
